MS Science Night for Grades VI and VII - April 28, 2011

Thursday, April 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. is MS Science Night for Grades VI and VII and their families! The evening will begin in the Residence Assembly Room with a presentation by senior, Anjalie Field, on her research into two toxins, melamine and cyanuric acid, found in cat food. This research was published in the journal, Food Chemistry. Following a brief question and answer session, students and guests are invited to the Science Building Rooms #103 and #105, where Grades VI and VII students will present research and activities completed over the course of the year.

Baldwin Parent Survey - In Your Inbox Next Week

Dear Parents,

Spring is in the air! It's visible in the blooms on the cherry trees and audible through the spirited cheering on our athletic fields - the mood on campus is energetic and we are all relieved to say goodbye to winter weather for quite a while.

Last week, I announced that we plan to email a survey to all of our parents on Monday, April 25. We want to know what you think is working at Baldwin, what you would like to change and simply, what is on your mind as a parent. Next Monday, each member of your household with an email address on file, will receive a link to the official survey.

The entire process will be conducted by a trusted third-party company and all responses will be 100% confidential. The survey will be available online from Monday, April 25 through Monday, May 9. A representative from the survey company will be on campus, in the Dining Room, on Tuesday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for any parents wishing to fill out a paper version.

Annual Fund Head of School Challenge

The April 30th deadline for our Head of School Challenge is fast approaching and we are thrilled to report that Grade VI is the first class to achieve 100% participation!

We are also pleased to announce that, to date, 71% of parents have participated in the 2010-2011 Annual Fund! Thank you for your unwavering support of Baldwin and our girls.

Head of School Sally Powell has graciously offered to host a delicious BBQ at her home on May 16 for the first class from each division that reaches 100% in Baldwin's Annual Fund.

We are striving to reach 100% Parent Participation overall and are eager to exceed last year's fantastic milestone of 93%. If you have not had the opportunity to make your commitment to the Annual Fund, we hope you will join us today and help your daughter's class and our school achieve this goal!

Alex Wake Volunteers and Runners Still Needed

Volunteer!
Volunteers are needed for Saturday, April 30 to assist with course-management and overall race-management of the Annual Alex Wake Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Family Walk. There will be an informational meeting for volunteers on Thursday, April 28 from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Athletic Center Multi-Purpose Room.

On the day of the race, volunteers will meet at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Athletic Center to receive a race-course safety vest and/or volunteer T-shirt. If you are interested in lending a hand to this event, please confirm by contacting Deb Surgi at dsurgi@baldwinschool.org

Participate in the race, as a team!
Interested in running in the race? It's not too late to register. We encourage students in the LS, MS and US to wear their class colors however, families and other runners can also dress up and participate as a team.

All runners and walkers must register as individuals online. All divisional offices also have team-sign up sheets for students to organize as a group.

Athletics News

There are still openings for ball and bat girls for the upcoming MS “A” lacrosse, MS “A” softball, Varsity Lacrosse and Varsity Softball games. Students in grades IV-VIII who are interested in participating can click on the BBG links under the "Weekly Downloads" section.

Also, there will be a free, US soccer clinic on Saturday, May 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Back Field. All student-athletes interested in playing Upper School soccer (including current Grade VIII) are invited to attend. If interested, please contact Varsity Coach Toril Hinchman at hinchman5@comcast.net

Finally, Upper School Fall sports practices will begin Monday, August 22 (times TBA). All US athletes interested in playing on a Varsity or JV team must attend as practices are mandatory. Upper School Fall sport offerings include: cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball. There will be optional practices in late August for Middle School teams, which will be announced later.

You still have time to purchase tickets in advance by sending in your reply card or RSVPing online and pre-registering your credit card so that you can spend less time waiting in line at the event and more time having fun. More than 20 million Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using approximately 133 square miles of aluminum foil. ALL that foil is recyclable, so next time be sure to toss the wrapper in the recycling bin, not the trash can!

Green Week 2011 - April 18 to April 22

This week is Green Week 2011! A collaboration between the Advanced Environmental Studies class, Earth Matters, Earth Matters Too and the Lower School. This inaugural program highlights Baldwin’s commitment to creating a safe and sustainable learning community. Various themes include: "Save Paper Day," (today) and "Save Oil Day" (Thursday).

Be Heard & Be Understood: Developing the Skills of a Master Communicator - Monday, April 25, 7 p.m.

Moderated by alumna Ruth Hochberger ’68, the panel will be comprised of specialists from different backgrounds, each an expert in her chosen field. Though their professions vary, each panelist shares a common strength – her ability to communicate clearly, succinctly and effectively. The panelists will share their experiences finding their voices, how they identify and tell excellent stories, things they wished someone had told them along the way and how they succeeded as a woman in their respected fields.
