In just one week, on Friday, March 15, Baldwin’s US girls will engage in a multitude of artistic endeavors led by fellow classmates, teachers, alumnae and local artists during the second annual US Arts Day. The girls choose four topics from approximately 20 options and spend their day immersed in new and exciting pursuits. This is the first year of the Baldwin Scholar’s program, an advanced research track that allows highly motivated seniors to pursue a particular area of interest in the sciences, arts, literature or elsewhere. The day will open with a performance of I Never Saw Another Butterfly at 9 a.m. in the assembly room and will culminate with the Celebration of the Arts Banquet in the Dining Hall from 7-9 p.m. where teachers will present this year’s art awards and students will showcase their performances and visual art to their peers. Please join us for this very fun gathering celebrating the arts and artists at Baldwin!

The Tanzanian Children’s Fund has formed a very special relationship with the Baldwin School. Baldwin has sent students, staff and to volunteer at the Rift Valley Children’s Village, a home for orphans and vulnerable children, for the past six years–and counting!

Baldwin students have become great friends with the children while learning the responsibilities of volunteering, and staff and alumnae have enjoyed getting to know children of a different culture. The loving, playful atmosphere of RVCV with its emphasis on education and responsibility is similar to that of Baldwin, and RVCV says this has been a joy for the Baldwin community to experience. RVCV has been working on empowering women through a Girls’ Club, microfinance, and more–a concept that is no stranger to Baldwin and something the volunteers enjoyed learning more about during their stay.

Not only did the Baldwin girls cherish the time they spent at RVCV, they continued to help upon their return to the States in many creative ways. Some of their favorite projects included making alphabet books for the children to color, designing plates and handmade headbands for each child, and holding numerous clothing drives. It thrilled the Baldwin girls to see pictures of their new friends in the Baldwin sports uniforms and handmade headbands they have donated.

As The Tanzanian Children’s Fund relationship with Baldwin grows, there are many new ideas in the works for different ways volunteers can help. Read more about Baldwin's support of the Rift Valley Children’s Village in Echoes here and Baldwin's Global Partnership Program here.

Baldwin Write Now welcomed award-winning poet Kim Bridgford to the Upper School on Monday, March 4. Dr. Bridgford is the director of the West Chester University Poetry Center and the West Chester University Poetry Conference. Dr. Bridgford’s preferred form of poetry writing is the sonnet. She treated 10th graders to an intimate reading of her own work, taught a lesson in the sonnet form, and facilitated students writing their own sonnets in iambic pentameter. During an informal celebratory lunch, Sally Powell, Head of School, awarded Prof. Bridgford the Baldwin School Women's Writing Medal. Student poets from Baldwin's Creative Writing Club read their poetry aloud and reflected on Bridgford's poetry, as well. Baldwin's Creative Writing Club is an Upper School organization that meets weekly, allowing time and space for students to write and discuss their work.
