| | 11/30/11... The annual People of Color Conference (PoCC), held by National Association of Independent Schools is held in Philadelphia this year and in celebration of this, Baldwin welcomed students, faculty, staff, alumnae and three visiting teachers to campus. Together, they discussed the necessary aspects of change and development within the schools when it comes to race, gender, orientation and social status.
For the first part of the morning, student leaders from BSU (Black Student Union), ASA (Asian Student Association), GLI (Girls Learn International) and Diversity Club spoke about how their groups are helping to advocate change for an even stronger Baldwin community.
The late morning panel discussion focus was The Baldwin School: 1888 to 2011: From Thinking Girls to Accomplished Women, Perspectives from a single sex school and educating women of color; with thirty-seven percent people of color in its total student enrollment and fifty-one percent of people of color for new students, Baldwin continues to foster the nurturing community that allows all students to express themselves in various ways, whether academically, socially or physically. |

11/28/11... The Lower School girls are hard at work practicing their math skills... at home and at school! For another year in a row, First In Math, an online mathematic practice game based off of skill sets, has been raising the girls' enthusiasm about math. This benchmark program follows what the girls learn in the classroom and allows them ample practice while at home.
"The purpose is to give self-directed students of all ability levels a chance to extend themselves in challenging ways," explain the Grade III Math Team Leaders, Mrs. Gates and Mrs. Rollins. Although this program is optional for all Baldwin Lower School girls, many of the girls enjoy the challenge and fun of such a program. |
| 11/29/11...Denise Cirelli, '11 is finding success on the University of Delaware Crew team. Earlier this month, Denise and her team traveled to Fairfax Station, VA for The Head of the Occoquan. 
Denise raced twice at stroke. Her 4+ boat came in 1st (out of 20 boats) and her 8+ boat came in 2nd (out of 24 boats).

| 11/28/11... This Thanksgiving, the Baldwin community committed to providing 25 food baskets to each organization: ElderNet of Lower Merion, Family Support Services and SILOAM. We are proud to announce that our community exceeded this pledge and was able to collect 88 baskets and raise over $1,500 for families in need!

| 11/28/11...HELP, a student-run service organization at Baldwin, was the vision of sophomore Marlana Edwards. She created HELP to assist children in transition due to domestic issues, trauma or unexpected challenges in life. On November 18, the organization collected and donated blankets, toiletries and toys to bring sunshine to an otherwise dark time in these children's lives. | 11/22/11...The fourth graders wrapped up a writing, technology and art project with a special lunch to celebrate their work. Students were asked to imagine they can invite anyone they'd like to lunch. First, students created a written piece, using research tools learned in technology class, in which they gave the readers clues as to whom they're inviting to lunch.
The girls also created dolls of their visitors, who came to eat lunch with them on November 22; they challenged students from other classes to guess the identify of their lunchtime visitor. Grade IV also ate their lunches on special place mats that they'd created for the luncheon. It was an exciting way for the girls to enjoy their last lunch together before Thanksgiving break!

11/22/11...Barbara Frishberg made the difficult decision to leave her Kindergarten classroom; today is her last day at Baldwin. We are grateful for Barb’s dedication and commitment to Baldwin girls and celebrate her 23 years.

11/21/11...Kimberly Rouse '12 has earned a placement in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 11 Chorus, which will perform on Saturday, January 28. Stay tuned for ticket information. During the District Chorus experience, Kimberly will rehearse with the 160 select singers and a renowned choral conductor. She will also audition for Regional Chorus, followed by All-State Chorus. Each of these Chorus placements will have the students singing a diverse Upper School/Collegiate repertoire. Each Chorus will contain the best 10-20 singers from the District on each voice part: Soprano I, Soprano II, Alto I, Alto II, Tenor I, Tenor II, Bass I and Bass II.
PMEA promotes and supports quality music education, learning and performance as well as promoting and supporting music education in schools and communities. PMEA is affiliated with The National Association for Music Education, NAfME. |
| 11/18/11...Lisa Jo Epstein '84 is the director of Hershel & The Hanukkah Goblins, an adaptation of the Caldecott-winning children's book. The play uses Gas & Electric Arts' signature style to provide a stirring theatrical experience that can be a springboard for young people and adults to dialogue about how to address the ongoing manifestations of oppression - all told with humor, puppetry and live music. Catch the performance at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Dec. 20-31. |
| 11/16/11... The events leading up to the Mother/Daughter finale event are in full swing. Each day brings a new experience that helps celebrate our girls' ability to make a difference in the world. The week long event culminates with an evening of community service for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia & Rift Valley Children's Village, an inspiring presentation by neonatal surgeon Holly Hedrick, and engaging entertainment by Baldwin alumna Jennifer Platkere Snyder '88 and her mom, former "All my Children" actress Deborajane Governor.
On Monday, November 14, the girls wore various items of pink with their uniform and donated to Girls, Inc., an organization dedicated to empowering young women.
On Tuesday afternoon, the girls kicked off another fun activity with PINKarate, a mix of self defense and karate.
The halls of the passageway are glowing with empowering thoughts from our girls and other female role models.

11/16/11... Julie Coxe Freund '74 is the Baldwin Alumna Artist for 2011-2012. In conjunction with her exhibition, Paintings from Maine (which runs in Baldwin's Art Gallery Nov. 13-Dec. 16), Julie spent time speaking with Upper School painting students on November 14. The students were eager to learn her techniques of mixed media processes as well as test them out on their own paintings.

| 11/14/11...Baldwin Seniors Elizabeth Asch, Madison Noteware and Kaylah Kleczka had a successful weekend of fall rowing. Saturday, November 12, all three girls competed in the 2011 Hutchinson Cup Regatta. Maddie Noteware took first place in the Women’s HS 1X Final winning gold. Kaylah Kleczka and Elizabeth Asch won the Women’s HS 2X Final also taking home a gold medal. On Sunday, November 13, Kaylah Kleczka competed in the 2011 Philadelphia Turn and Burn Regatta. She won gold medals in both the Woman’s Jr. 1X Final (1500 Meter Turn) and the Woman’s Jr. 1X Final (500 Meter Burn).
Congratulations to our three seniors for a successful final weekend of fall racing!

11/15/11...On November 7, Sophia Tareen '13 attended a luncheon held by the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) at the University Club in New York City. As head of the Girls Learn International (GLI) Club at Baldwin, she was asked by the GLI organization to be a student ambassador for the event. GLI is an international program connecting teenage girls around the world in support of female education. Among the philanthropic guests were Law and Order SVU actress Tamara Tunie, television journalist and director Perri Peltz, and respected broadcast journalist Christiane Amanpour. These three women were all recognized for their outstanding work in the efforts towards global equity. Sophia was the first student speaker and introduced Mavis Leno (Jay Leno’s wife) to discuss her work as chair of the FMF’s Campaign for Afghan Women and Girls. She also spoke to about 200 attendees concerning her club’s mission towards universal education and gender equality. |
| 11/11/11... Baldwin Write Now's second visitor of the year was Ann Warren Turner, author of Sitting Bull Remembers, Nettie's Trip South, and Abe Lincoln Remembers. During her busy visit, Ann signed copies of her books for the girls, shared her experiences as an accomplished female writer, visited with various English classrooms to speak with the girls about creative writing, as well as hosted a discussion with faculty and staff about teaching writing to students.
The Middle School girls loved their time spent with Ann Turner, asking questions about her books and tips for their own creative writing.
Head of School Sally Powell presented Ann Turner with the special Baldwin's Women's Writing Medal after her wonderful visit and time spent with the Baldwin community.

11/11/2011. . . Maddie Noteware ’12 was named to the 2011-2012 US Rowing Honorable Mention Honor Roll. Fifty-seven student athletes were named to the 2011-12 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll and another 62 student-athletes received honorable mention honor roll recognition.
The US Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. Applicants must be USRowing members, have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. |

11/10/2011. . . Senior Kaylah Kleczka signed a National Letter of Intent and accepted a scholarship to row at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Kaylah is a 4-year member of Baldwin's Varsity Crew Team. She has also played Varsity Volleyball for four years and Varsity Basketball for three and is the co-captain of all three teams.
At UMASS Amherst, Kaylah plans to study Sports Management.
Kaylah is an accomplished rower with first place finishes in the 2009 83rd Annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta (4X), the 2010 Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta (2X), the 2010 Philadelphia City Championship (2X), the NJ Scholastic Rowing Championship (2X), the 2011 PSRA City Championships (4X), and the 2011 Philadelphia Youth Regatta (1X). Kaylah also captured the silver medal in 2011 85th Annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta (4X), and a fourth place finish at the 2011 SRAA National Championship Regatta (4X). She also competed in and made the finals at the 2011 Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association 66thAnnual Regatta finishing 6thplace (4X) and rowed for her country in the 2011 Henley Women’s Regatta in England.

| 11/10/11... On October 29, Baldwin's Upper School Varsity Swim Team traveled to Overbrook School for the Blind for the 2011 Eastern Athletic Association for the Blind's Swim Tournament. Students ages 13 to 21 from Overbrook, the Maryland School for the Blind (MSB), the New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE), and the West Virginia School for the Blind (WVSB) were in attendance, and Baldwin student-athletes assisted with all aspects of the meet, including timing, staging and swim assignments.
Despite the unseasonable rain, sleet and snow, all of the athletes stepped up their game, but in the end the Overbrook Huskies were faster and stronger as a team than the NYISE Stars, the MSB Bees and the WVSB Raiders. The volunteers and spectators braved the elements to help make the tournament a great success.
Over the course of Baldwin's three-year partnership with Overbrook, our students have helped with Overbrook's prom, worked on service projects, hosted Overbrook students for theater performances, and visited campus for classes, Braille lessons and lunch. |
|  11/10/11. . . Varsity Soccer topped InterAc opponent Agnes Irwin 4-3. The Bears set the tempo and led 3-1 at halftime.
Co-captain Marina Crowe '12 had one goal, Krista Hinchman '15 tallied two goals and an assist, and Ellie Greenberg '16 scored the team's final goal. Maddy Brill-Edwards '15 earned one assist. "The team hustled for the entire time, and the defense led by seniors Tiffany Hau and Julia Smith, were on top of their game!" shared Varsity Coach Toril Hinchman.
The Bears travel to Notre Dame on 11/10 for their final game of the season.

11/10/2011. . . For the fourth consecutive year, MS B Team Basketball Coach Elsie Pitocchelli attended the Coaches Vs. Cancer Clinic, a basketball clinic for high school and colleges in the area and a fund raiser. The event was held at Germantown Academy.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball coaches. The initiative is designed to leverage the celebrity and passion of our nation’s basketball coaches to help battle cancer. In Philadelphia, Coaches vs. Cancer has a unique edge, with all six coaches uniting their time and effort to raise funds and awareness to beat this disease: Fran Dunphy of Temple University, Phil Martelli of Saint Joseph's University, Jerome Allen of University of Pennsylvania, Jay Wright of Villanova University, John Giannini of La Salle University and Bruiser Flint of Drexel University.

11/9/11... Environmental Science Teacher Tiffany Borsch and her Grade XII students started the year talking about Tragedy of the Commons, the concept that our natural resources are the Earth’s capital for all of us (energy, air, land, water, biodiversity). The class has been focusing on alternate energy resources as well as different sources of air pollution. To better understand the impact of gases emitted every day, the Grade XII girls examined the exhaust from their vehicles. They saw the particulate matter that was caught on a clean white t-shirt, and through calculations discovered how much carbon dioxide is emitted from each vehicle.
