3/21/2012...This past Friday, Baldwin was abuzz as Upper School students flitted around campus, popping into art studios, classrooms, the library or gym to take part in one of over 25 workshops available for this year’s inaugural Arts Day, an event adapted from the annual P.E.A.C.E. Day.
Workshops were led by the Pennsylvania Ballet, Academy of the Vocal Arts (AVA), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), in addition to Baldwin parents, faculty and staff who are experts in their fields. Students were exposed to many different types of art – ranging from the performing arts to the decorative and fine arts.
In the workshop entitled “Training to Become a Professional Ballet Dancer,” students got the inside scoop on the hectic training schedules and pre-performance rituals that take place behind the curtains at the Pennsylvania Ballet. For students harboring a sweet tooth, cookbook author and owner of Sweet Lilly Confections Jennifer McGlinn ’87 imparted tips on how to turn designing delectable treats into a burgeoning business. Those who wanted to take advantage of a rigorous physical workout also attended workshops like Rhythm Tap Dancing, Zumba Fitness and Modern Dance – all sure to get the heart rate up.

Faced with violent wives, royal funerals, possible blindness and approaching death, George and his friends will have the audience holding their sides in laughter as the poor man can only pray he wakes up before the tragic end of the performance. |  3/19/2012. . . The crew team came to the starting line ready to race in the 1st Manny Flick / Horvat Series of Rowing Races on the Schuylkill River, Philadelphia. Captain Kaylah Kleczka (bow) and Maddie Noteware (stroke), captured the Varsity Girls’ Double Sculls (2x). They not not only won their flight but posted the fastest time of the day in this event in a time of 6:10.6. Coach Liesel Hud commented, “When Kaylah and Maddie came through the door, they portrayed the competitive attitude that they were mentally and physically ready to race. They executed their race plan beautifully!” |
|  3/19/2012…The top readers for the 76ers' Read for Ronald Read-a-thon were announced this past Friday, March 16 at the Lower School assembly.
Of the 69 students who participated in this year's program, four of Baldwin’s biggest bookworms were recognized. Grade II student Blake Landow snagged first place for clocking in the most time between the pages of her favorite books, while Grade V students Talya Polak and Emily Grace were awarded second and third place, respectively, for their efforts. An Honorable Mention was also presented to Grade III student Elise Kait for her readiness to get reading.
In addition to announcing the winners, Baldwin’s Director of Lower School Baiba Vasys also revealed to the enthusiastic audience that the Read-a-thon participants had read a whopping 99,504 minutes in the month of February, earning a total of $5,488 for the Ronald McDonald House.

3/14/12...Baldwin alumna Carolyn Simpson Scott ’74 recently spoke with Honors Biology and AP Biology students on the topic of genetics research.
Dr. Scott, a physician and practicing gynecologist who advocates for women who are at risk for breast and colon cancer, discussed the role that BRCA mutations play in our genetic make-up. The BRCA mutation – a mutation on either of the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 – is often the culprit behind breast cancer development in both men and women, and can lead to hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome. According to Dr. Scott, if the gene mutation runs in your family, the likelihood of either a male of female getting it increases by 50 percent, because it is both dominant and non-sex-linked. In other words, it can be transmitted to any family member, independent of sex. Furthermore, if the BRCA mutation is actually present in your DNA, then there is a 10-fold increase in the likelihood of getting breast cancer. In addition, the presence of BRCA mutations can increase the risk of developing other cancers, such as prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancer.  |
|  3/13/2012. . . University of Pennsylvania fencer Sarah Parmacek ( '11) qualified for the NCAA National Fencing Championship to be held in Columbus later this month. Sarah qualified after competing in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette last Saturday. In addition, Sarah was named to the Second Team All-Ivy last month.

| 3/13/12...Baldwin is proud to be the host of this year's Inter-Ac Art Exhibition, running now through March 20. The exhibition features selected drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics, jewelry and woodworking from the Upper School art departments of Agnes Irwin, Episcopal Academy, Friends Central, Haverford, and Shipley, as well as our own wonderful Baldwin artists. Baldwin added an arts-dedicated TV monitor and a new exhibition hallway to accommodate this very special show, which means we now have increased resources for our own Upper School and Middle School art shows slated for April and May. The Inter-Ac Art Exhibition is, by necessity, a select show focusing primarily on the work of seasoned juniors and seniors, with an occasional sophomore or even freshman making the cut. |  3/12/2012...Take relationships, a group of bubbly adolescents, and some drama, and you’ve got high school all over again. Throw pom-poms, a banana costume and some unruly elements into the mix and you’ve got the Upper School drama group’s educational theater production on the periodic table of elements.
Over the past couple of weeks, the girls have been working diligently on writing a script, coming up with dance choreography for each musical number, and conceptualizing costumes. “Though the play certainly promises to be entertaining, it’s also educational,” explained Upper School Theater Teacher Meghan Hoffman. “We want the audience to watch the actors’ behavior and determine who is which element.”

| 3/7/12...The tell-tale green bag used in Family Gatherings today revealed a survival challenge, puzzles and riddles, and decks of cards. Our survival challenge: a 200-mile trek through space after our spaceship crashed. We worked in small teams to rank the items we'd need for survival from 1-15, and then came to a consensus as a family. Here are NASA's answers to the challenge...how did your family measure up? |
|  3/6/2012. . . Marr sisters McCaleigh '19 and Campbell '20 both won "All-Around Gymnast" at the recent Mardi Gras meet.
McCaleigh, a Level 7 gymnast, finished 1st on beam, 2nd on floor, 2nd on bars, 3rd on vault, and 1st All Around with a a score of 36.95.
Campbell, a Level 6 gymnast, finished 1st on bars, 2nd on beam, 3rd on floor, 4th vault, and 1st All-Around with a score of 36.65.
The sisters compete with the Mananettes.

| 3/6/12...Adapted from the annual P.E.A.C.E. Day, Arts Day will be celebrated on Friday, March 16 through a series of workshops led by the city's most talented creatives.
From stage to screen, Grade VIII-XII students will have the opportunity to explore their creative passions with cultural icons from the Pennsylvania Ballet, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Academy of the Vocal Arts. In addition, Baldwin parents, alumnae and faculty will lend their expertise in their crafts as art therapists, pastry chefs, mural artists, costume designers and more. The tone for the day will be set during an opening assembly led by film maker Danielle Lurie.

|  3/6/2012. . . Freshman lacrosse player, Sloan Warren ('11) led the University of Virginia Cavaliers with 4 goals in the UVA vs. Penn State showdown on March 4th. UVA fell short and lost 14-7.
Sloan Warren was an All American Lacrosse Player and Academic All American while at Baldwin; she was a 6-year varsity player.

|  3/6/2012. . . Senior Nicole Wells returned from the National Indoor Field Hockey Tournament held in Virginia Beach, VA a gold medal winner. She and her team, the Xcalibur Knights, were undefeated for seven games and won the gold medal in the U19 A Pool, the tournament’s most select division. Indoor hockey clubs from throughout the country needed to first qualify for the tournament, considered the pinnacle of indoor hockey.

3/5/2012...On March 2, the Lower School participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart assembly, organized by Baldwin’s Physical Education Department Coordinator, Dr. Kathleen M. England.
Gathered in groups by grade, Baldwin’s Pre-K-Grade 5 youngsters were assigned a single task, to have fun by jump roping to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. Funds will help fight our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers - cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
With dozens of colorful jump ropes to choose from, the students wasted no time in buddy-ing up or taking part in group games for some heart-healthy hopping. From Chinese jump rope to the limbo, outbursts of glee and the sound of jump ropes whooshing, Lower Schoolers demonstrated that community service can be both fun and rewarding. |
