Baldwin hosts Emily Bazelon for a free lecture 5/1/13 On Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the Assembly Room, Baldwin will be hosting a free lecture with author Emily Bazelon on the importance of responsible behavior by teenagers today.   Ms. Bazelon is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy. The book includes personal accounts of bullying experiences, and provides suggestions and practical tools for the victims, bystanders, parents and educators.

Upper School Art Exhibition 05/01/2013 The 2013 US Art Exhibition is now on view in the Residence Art Gallery. The exhibition is the highlight of the year for the Visual Arts Department. The work of our Baldwin painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, and jewelry makers is not to be missed! The exhibition runs though May 9.

Gastroenterologist, Dr. Elizabeth Anne Sun, Visits US Biology Class 5/1/13   Dr. Elizabeth Anne Sun visited the AdvancedCellular Biology class on April29th to speak with the students about the clinical practice of gastroenterology. She discussed the symptoms and clinical signs of illnesses of the digestive system from the internal point of view as seen with an endoscope. She demonstrated the advances in the technology of removing swallowed objects and polyps and repair of damaged tissue. With a three-dimensional model of the esophagus and stomach, Dr. Sun helped the students to place an endoscope into the upper GI tract. The students watched videos of the removal of an opened paper clip, a fish bone, batteries, and a plastic piece from an IV apparatus, all swallowed by patients seen by Dr. Sun in her practice.

Record-Breaking Numbers for Baldwin's Gala The fundraising results are in...this year's Community Gala raised a record-breaking amount of more than $500,000, including $185,000 for the planned Simpson Center for the Performing Arts. Thank you to the nearly 300 attendees, and everyone who helped make Denim, Diamonds & Boldly Blue a great success! All proceeds raised through the event, raffle, live, silent and online auctions benefit The Baldwin School and make a difference in the lives of our students today and tomorrow.   Congratulations to our outstanding co-chairs, Sharna Liggett, Molly Terlevich and Jolie Khan and their hardworking committee members, for their incredible commitment and tireless efforts in support of this important fundraiser.  They created an evening that made us all proud to be a part of the Baldwin community.  A special thank you to our sponsors who contributed to the success of this year's gala in so many ways.

Baldwin Scholar Julia Tyminski Presents RENT, the Musical 4/25/2013   On Friday, May 3, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., Baldwin senior, Julia Tyminski, will present her interpretation of Jonathan Larson’s musical, RENT. This presentation of RENT is the culmination of Julia’s Baldwin Scholar’s Project. For her project, Julia examined how Larson came to write RENT, exploring his process of translating the 19th century Puccini opera, La Boheme, into a modern-day story about starving artists surviving in New York City’s Lower East Side at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Julia is directing and producing this performance which will be presented in the Baldwin Athletic Center's MPR. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

Mock Drunk-Driving Accident Staged on Campus 4/24/13 If you were in the Baldwin area around 10:45 yesterday morning, it was a scary sight. In the parking lot outside the North Door were three police cars, three fire trucks, two ambulances, and two passenger cars facing each other as if they had been in a head-on collision with each other. The Upper School, in cooperation with the Narberth Ambulance Corps, staged a drunk-driving "accident.” Along with Narberth Ambulance, the Lower Merion Police Department and Bryn Mawr, Belmont Hills and Penn Wynne fire companies attended the scene to safely remove an intoxicated driver and injured passengers from the cars. Police administered a sobriety test and arrested the driver. The victims in the crash were Baldwin students Claudia Hogg, Nicole Winit, Taylor Nickens and Julz Vaccaro. All Upper School girls attended this realistic demonstration on the deadly effects of driving while impaired. This event is timed in advance of our prom and other spring events that can result in tragedy.

May 10th Open House for Fall MS Equestrian Program Baldwin Athletics will host an Open House on May 10 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm for student-athletes in grades 5-7 and parents who are interested in the MS Equestrian Program, a novice equestrian PE option, which started this spring. The Open House will take place at the stables next to the Philadelphia Country Club, located at 1108 Stoney Lane, Gladwyne, less than 10 minutes from Baldwin. Please park on Stonybrook and walk down the lane to the stable; the riding rink is at the end of the lane.

MS Science Night for Grades VI and VII is Tonight 4/23/2013 Date: Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Time: 7:00 - 8:30 PM Locations: Residence Assembly Room and Science Building, Rooms #103 and #105   The evening will begin at 7 pm in the Residence Assembly Room with a presentation by senior, Taylor Nickens, on the research she conducted at the National Institutes of Health as a student in the Physician Scientist Training Program, STEMPREP. Following a brief question and answer session, students and guests are invited to the Science Building, Rooms #103 and #105, where Grades VI and VII students will present research and activities they have completed.

US Blue Gray Games Raise Spirit 4/19/2013 The Upper School Athletic Association helped to raise spirits high at the first-ever Upper School Blue Gray Games on Wednesday, April 13. The Lower School Blue Gray Games -- for grades 3 - 5 -- have been a favorite tradition for 43 years, beginning in 1970.

Baldwin MS/US Orchestras Join Haverford/Musicopia Orchestras for Upcoming Spring Concert 4/17/2013 SPRING CONCERT Monday, April 22, 2013 Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: The Haverford School, Centennial Hall Please come and enjoy a free Spring Concert at The Haverford School, Centennial Hall, on Monday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. This collaborative performance will feature the Baldwin MS and US Orchestras paired on stands with musicians from the Haverford School and Musicopia Orchestras.   Musicopia is a non-profit organization that reaches more than 60,000 children each year through educational music enrichment programs in schools and communities throughout the Delaware Valley. Haverford School graduate, Amar Patel, brother of Baldwin Senior, Maya Patel, is responsible for making the initial contact with Musicopia that resulted in the Haverford/Musicopia partnership and this concert event. Advanced Cellular Biology Class Discusses Personal Genomics with Dr. Karen Buchkovich-Sass 4/17/2013 On Tuesday April 16th, Dr. Karen Buchkovich-Sass visited the Advanced Cellular Biology class to discuss personal genomics based on the analysis of her own genome and her professional experience as a researcher. This discussion was particularly significant as Dr. Buchkovich-Sass and her husband, Dr. Philip Sass, PhD, a geneticist and biochemist, made a joint donation that allowed the students in both Advanced Biology classes to participate in the National Geographic Genographic Project.   While that project traced the migration routes of populations of Homo sapiens out of east Africa using mitochondrial DNA analysis, Dr. Buchkovich-Sass addressed the technology developed to obtain personal genome data. She shared her personal genetic scan analysis from a company known for its careful identification and statistical analysis of single nucleotide changes between people with a particular disease and those without the disease to identify the specific nucleotide changes that have a high probability of predicting a particular disease. She engaged the students in a lively discussion of the future of personal genetics and ethical questions regarding the use of personal genetic data.

Freshman Double Win Manny Flick-Horvath Regatta 4/16/2013 The crew team raced in the Manny Flick-Horvath Regatta (Flick #4) on the Schuylkill River on Sunday, April 14, 2013. With several injuries on the team, Coach Hud shuffled line ups with successful results. The Freshmen Double of Rachel Sutor and Samantha Dewey won their race in a time of 6:23.32 over Upper Dublin, Haddon Township and Friend’s Select.  Danielle Foltz debuted in the Girls Gig/Novice Single race coming in 4th with a time of 8:15 in the only Gig entered.

Dissecting the Brain: Leading Neurologist Visits Baldwin Science Classroom 4/15/2013 For the nineteenth year, Dr. Richard Kanoff visited Baldwin to discuss and dissect human brains with the students in the Advanced Cellular Biology class. In attendance were three neurosurgical residents who are part of the Residency Program that Dr. Kanoff developed for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). It was an exciting 75 minutes of holding the human brain, making brain slices, and discussing surgical techniques and patient care. In addition, students were able to follow up on some facts about Albert Einstein’s brain that they learned during their recent tour of the Mütter Museum collection.

MS A Softball Beats Germantown Academy 4/11/2013 The MS A softball team won their first game of the season with an exciting come from behind 17-16 win against league rival, Germantown Academy.

Baldwin Participates in Green Week 4/15/13 This week, Baldwin will be participating in Green Week, a national, annual event that empowers schools to engage in sustainability-focused lessons, projects or activities. Maskers Spring Play is Euripedes' Medea 4/9/13 The Maskers Spring Play, Euripides' Medea, premiers on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. There will be an open dress rehearsal for faculty and staff on Thursday, April 11, at 6pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.  Euripides’ Medea was first performed in 431 B.C. A story of passion, betrayal, and vengeance, Medea stands the test of time and is still produced all over the world. Play director, Ms. Jessica DalCanton, who spent time as an actor and lecturer in Cyprus and Greece, infuses traditional style and classic choral odes and dances into this production.This tragic Greek tale will prove that revenge is a reckless emotion that destroys both the innocent and the guilty in one "foul" swoop.

Haley Weiss and Caroline Milgram to Perform at the Kimmel Center 4/4/13 Haley Weiss, Grade XI, and Caroline Milgram, Grade V, will perform at The Kimmel Center on April 8th in Wolf Performing Arts Center's production of I Never Saw Another Butterfly, the centerpiece of The Butterfly Project. The performance is part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. The cast has recently concluded a 40-performance tour throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area. To purchase tickets for only $10.00, click here.
