| The Team Remains Undefeated 12/16/2011. . . The Varsity Squash team traveled to Penn Charter yesterday and defeated the always tough Quakers, 6-3. Morgan Steelman won a close match 3-2. Tiffany Hau, Alexa Horwitz, Alexa Tzarnas, Olivia Horwitz, and Cashel McCarthy all won their matches 3-0. Ryan Morgan, Selena Maity and Maya Patel all lost hard fought matches in the top 3 slots, 3-0. Long time Associate Head Coach Bruce Kelly noted that "this was a great win for us as we are a young team and everyone played very well and competed like champions against a tough opponent."
Varsity Squash remains unbeaten.

| 12/16/11... For a holiday service project, Grade IV is collecting gently used children's books for WePAC, the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, through mid-March. WePAC's mission is to promote childhood literacy by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through re-opening and staffing libraries, academic mentoring, and after school enrichment. Two years ago more than 4,000 students in West Philadelphia's 23 elementary schools were without a school library. WePAC has actively cut that number in half, but they still need more books.
 Grade IV spent the day celebrating the kick-off of their collection, decorating boxes and creating extra creative pieces to put in with their book donations. |
| 12/14/11...For more than a decade, Baldwin's community has donated much-needed items to The Consortium in Philadelphia through a "Secret Santa" program. Each year, a truck-load of books, gloves, clothing and gifts are sent to families in need. The program is currently managed by Baldwin's Hattie Holmes and Sadie Lee, and has generated interest from the surrounding community. In fact, in a single year some individuals have donated 30 coats and several large bags of gifts. We are proud of the generosity of our Lower, Middle and Upper School families - you bring holiday cheer to those in need!

| 12/14/11...The new recycling bins are in and we can't wait to put them to good use. Earth Matters (Upper School Environmental Club) donated $200 from a bread sale to Baldwin, to help purchase the new recycling program bins and stickers.
"Landfill Trash" and "Recycling Trash" are the new terms; look for these bins in any classroom! "Recycling Trash" is co-mingled: all plastics, paper, glass and aluminum. Everything else goes to the landfill.

12/13/11...Mrs. Taylor, mother of Musu Taylor '14, visited Baldwin's Model UN club meeting and spoke with all the girls about her Liberian heritage, as well as the country's recent history. Liberia is one of the countries assigned to the Baldwin Model UN group, along with Fiji.
The Model UN group led by faculty advisor Phil D'Elia, has some new and exciting roles for this year: Tarlan Daryoush '13, Liberia Third Committee - Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM); Annie Leonardi '13, Liberia First Committee - Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC); Aliki Karnavas '15, Liberia Third Committee Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM); Eleanor Pressman '14, Liberia Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review, 2015; and Emilie Wache '13, Liberia First Committee - Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC).

| 12/13/11...Baldwin senior Laura Jarin-Lipschitz was named one of 31 student finalists in the Delaware Valley Science Council (DVSC) Awards Program and will move on to the interview stage of the program to be held January 21, 2012 at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
There, Jarin-Lipschitz will converse with two teams of scientists, and be judged on her expertise in science, her poise and her communications skills. Additionally, Laura will have the opportunity to interact with professional engineers and scientists who are willing to share their educational and career experiences.
Based upon the results of the tests and interviews, awards are presented at the Annual Recognition Dinner in March. The student awards fall into three categories: 1) Science Council Awards, 2) Professional Society Awards and 3) Specific Directed Awards. Awards ranging from $100 to $1,000 are offered to up to 50 outstanding students.
The first phase of the annual DVSC Awards Program for high school science students was the exams held on October 15, 2011. Students chose two of four topics including biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Baldwin seniors Julia Dewey, Alexandra Dias-Lalcaca, Laura Jarin-Lipschitz, Randa Melhem and Madison Noteware participated in these highly competitive exams. |

| The Team is now 3-0 12/9/2011. . . The Varsity Squash Team traveled to Springside and won 9-0.
Selena Maity, Maya Patel, Morgan Steelman, Alexa Horwitz, Tiffany Hau, Alexa Tzarnas Olivia Horwitz and Cashel McCarthy all won their matches 3-0. Ryan Morgan came back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 in five.
The team is 3-0 in the InterAc.

| 12/8/11...Each year, The Haverford School and Variety, the children’s charity, team up to present the Martin Luther King Caring Community Carnival. For the second year, Baldwin's Middle School school students, along with Agnes Irwin, will participate in this exciting, meaningful day.
The Carnival takes place on Sunday, January 15 in Haverford’s Field House. This Middle School service project is part of the National Martin Luther King Day of Service.

|  12/8/2011. . . Varsity Squash hosted Episcopal Academy yesterday and won a highly competitive match, 5-4. Ryan Morgan won 3-1, Selena Maity won 3-2, Maya Patel won 3-1, Morgan Steelman won 3-0 and Olivia Horwitz won 3-0.

|  12/7/2011. . . Last week, the Baldwin Bears traveled to The George School for the Cougar Classic tip off tournament against The Solebury School. Despite a solid effort, Solebury’s speed and experience was too much for the young Baldwin team and they were defeated 43-10.
The second game against Villa Victoria was a much better match. The Bears came sluggish in the first half only scoring nine points. After the break, the Bears picked up the pace converting breakaways into points scoring 24 points on route to a 33-8 win. Sophomore Jennifer Motter has accepted her role as an impact player scoring 6 of her 11 points in the third quarter adding 8 blocks and 11 rebounds to lead the Bears. Sophomore Nellie Shields contributed 8 points and 5 steals while junior Julz Vaccaro scored 6 in the victory placing Baldwin third in the Tournament.

The team is 2-0 and will take on InterAc opponent EA today at Baldwin.

| The Team Falls Short to EA 12/7/2011. . . The Varsity Swim Team may have fallen short to visiting InterAc opponent Episcopal yesterday but the team shows great promise and numbers.
“With 40 swimmers, this is our largest team in our history,” stated Baldwin’s Head Coach Dave Hart, “our depth and the talent within the depth has taken Baldwin Swimming to a new level.”

| 12/6/11... The Baldwin B-flats traveled to Rosemont Presbyterian Village to perform for Baldwin's oldest aluma, Ada Mutch.
The girls sang holiday songs for Ada and her friends. For their final song, Ada joined the B-flats in singing the Baldwin alma mater.
Ada Mutch '22 and the Class of 2012 ... 90 years apart.

| 12/7/11...The Middle School Robotics team participated in a scrimmage this past weekend at Penn State Abington. Baldwin's three teams placed 3rd, 10th, and 16th. They were up against both Middle and High school teams. The girls were able to gain experience and work even more on their projects as they prepare for their January competition.
The girls won a Special Judge's Award for best t-shirt design. Special congrats to Sara Syed '18 for creating the back design and to Zara Wenzinger '17 for the front design.

| 12/5/11...The Baldwin B-Flats spread the sounds of the Holiday season during the First Friday Celebration in Bryn Mawr Friday evening. The girls caroled up and down Lancaster Avenue, in the theater lobby, in Milkboy and in various stores, while bringing holiday cheer to merchants and customers. At the gazebo, the girls led the gathered crowd in singing their favorite carols and songs of Christmas around the lighted tree. The Bryn Mawr Civic Association has asked Baldwin to make this an annual tradition!
The Eliza-B-thans performed to a very appreciative crowd at the Villanova Conference Center "Nutcracker Tea" on Friday. The girls sang songs of the season, including various solo performances by Musu Taylor, Laura Nguyen, Emily Urban and trio performances by Julia Hopkins, Mary Morris, Tiana Mason, Annie Leonardi and Carolyn Wong. After the performance, they spoke with Michelle Rounick, Baldwin Class of 2003.

|  12/2/2011. . . The Varsity Squash Team beat visiting Shipley School yesterday 9-0.
Ryan Morgan '14, Selena Maity '14, Maya Patel '13, Alexa Horwitz '15, Tiffany Hau '12, Morgan Steelman '16, Alexa Tzarnas '12, Olivia Horwitz '16, and Cashel McCarthy '14 all won their matches 3-0.
Last year's varsity squash team captured the InterAc title for the second consecutive year and finished third at the US Squash High School Nationals. The team graduated three players. The 2011-2012 team looks to retain the InterAc Title again this season.

|  12/1/2011. . . Rachel Sternberg ’12 recently received a National Varsity Letter in Equestrian Activities from the United States Equestrian Federation High School Equestrian Athlete Program. The program is in its third year, and is open to high school equestrian athletes in all breeds and disciplines. Requirements to earn a varsity letter include a logged minimum of 100 hours of equestrian activity and documentation for competing in at least three horse shows within one school calendar year. Rachel is one of the 165 students across the U.S. thus far to have earned the equestrian varsity letter this year.
