Graduates of girls’ secondary schools have a definite edge over their coed peers.  UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute recently released the results of a well-documented study that shows a statistically significant advantage. Commissioned by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, the UCLA study offers the first-ever peer-reviewed research on the subject. Ever since educators observed that girls tend to slide in confidence and academic achievement in early adolescence, interest in girls’ schools has risen. Yet, single-sex education has defied rigorous analysis due to confounding demographic and other influences. The results of this new study, drawn from a large blind sample of alumnae from coed and girls’ schools across the country, give educators more facts to support their theories.

A Letter from the Head of School and the Chair of the Board

November 24, 2008
Dear Members of the Baldwin Community:

Recent images of Baldwin include: seniors, purple blazers flying, running a victory lap around our newly opened indoor track; eager Middle School cross-country runners and squash players setting new records for participation; Lower School students squealing as the first snowflakes of the year fall on eager tongues. As the holiday season approaches and the financial world spins out of control, I write to follow up on our recent “State of the School” gathering.  While I cannot predict the future I can inform you of all that Baldwin is doing to keep the focus on our girls and to ensure that we stand true to our mission during these times of uncertainty.

Tradition and today join hands in an eco-friendly architectural tribute to Frank Furness

The Baldwin School officially opened its new athletic center on Friday, Oct. 17 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a pep rally for its PreK to Grade 12 student body and faculty. What makes Baldwin’s new athletic center unique among the many new additions to local campuses is its architecture, which is a metaphor for tradition and today joining hands. How many gymnasiums look like a Victorian Frank Furness building and are eco-friendly at the same time?
