12/2/2008 'Education is the best investment in the worst of times' A Letter from the Head of School and the Chair of the Board
November 24, 2008 Dear Members of the Baldwin Community:
Recent images of Baldwin include: seniors, purple blazers flying, running a victory lap around our newly opened indoor track; eager Middle School cross-country runners and squash players setting new records for participation; Lower School students squealing as the first snowflakes of the year fall on eager tongues. As the holiday season approaches and the financial world spins out of control, I write to follow up on our recent “State of the School” gathering. While I cannot predict the future I can inform you of all that Baldwin is doing to keep the focus on our girls and to ensure that we stand true to our mission during these times of uncertainty.
“Education is the best investment in the worst of times.” This is the message expressed by the independent school world and it has never rung more true. As private college tuitions skyrocket and more families turn to more affordable public college choices, an investment in Baldwin becomes even more crucial than ever. With our individualized curriculum that fully supports potential in an atmosphere of intellectual rigor, our parent programs and our co-curricular activities, the value-added of a Baldwin education has never been more evident.
We are determined, through sound fiscal management and planning, to sustain our programs and to support our girls, our faculty and staff through these difficult times. Dependent on tuition dollars, we cannot afford to cut back on all that we have worked so hard to build. We will find cost savings on items that we can control: energy, paper, and waste. Our Finance Committee is examining our investments to ensure that our returns are maximized while our assets are safe. We anticipate an increased demand on financial aid dollars and will make the best decisions to support current and new families.
As dedicated members of the Baldwin community, you are critical to our success and future. Please, show your love for Baldwin by continuing to support Baldwin, whether it is by returning your daughter’s re-enrollment contract early, by supporting our fundraising efforts, or by leading the way as a member of the faculty, staff or board of trustees. Share your belief in the school by introducing your friends and relatives to Baldwin. Sustained enrollment will guarantee each student’s experience. Support the school by giving to our annual fund and to our capital campaign. Please, be the strongest and loudest voices in championing our school. We are so proud of our Baldwin girls, and your celebration of them is authentic and compelling.
We must all step forward for Baldwin. Each of us, in our own way, makes our school better and stronger. And we thank you for your commitment. Sally M. Powell Kathryn Taylor ’70 Head of School Chair of the Board |
