A Message from Sally M. Powell

Dear Friends,

The next time you visit the Schoolhouse Library, you will notice a bit of a change to the exterior. Thanks to the generous philanthropic support of an anonymous donor, I am proud to share that our library will now be formally known as The Anne Frank Library.

The donor chose to honor Anne Frank for her courage, spirit and strength of character; attributes that we value highly within our community and encourage within our own, Thinking Girls.

On Monday, Feb. 7 Baldwin will welcome a new member to the campus “family”: the Cambridge School.  We are pleased for them to join us as they continue to set a high standard for early childhood education in the area with:

  • Educationally based programs for infants through two-year-olds
  • An outstanding preschool with "child friendly" early language, science and math curriculums
  • A completely renovated "state of the art" facility (located in the space previously leased by KinderCare)
  • An extraordinarily dedicated and professional teaching staff
  • Strong ongoing partnerships between parents, teachers and children

Please visit Cambridge’s website or call 610-642-4871 for more information.

A Message from Lower School Director Baiba Vasys

Dear Lower School Parents,

Last Friday Lower School celebrated B.E.A.R. Day, a long time tradition at Baldwin. It was also the kick-off for the 76ers’ Read for Ronald Read-a-thon. Reading is a life-long pleasure that we all can enjoy; all reading counts, including being read to aloud!

From the very earliest ages, reading to and with their children is one of the most valuable things parents can do to help develop their youngsters’ overall language ability. Incorporating time in a family’s busy schedule for reading both aloud and silently pays great dividends.

The Baldwin Summer Experience is open for registration!  Our three-week enrichment program consists of specialized week-long courses; the program is open to all girls entering grades K through IX in the fall of 2011.
Baldwin lawn signs are back!  Our next All School Open House is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 13  from 2 to 4 p.m.  Please show your Baldwin spirit and place a lawn sign in your yard to help spread the word. Signs are available now and may be picked up in either the Residence, Admissions or the Lower School offices. Thank you very much for your help and support.
A Message from the Admissions Team

If you have not yet returned your daughter's enrollment contract for next year, please do so at this time. We are planning programs and staffing throughout the school for the coming year and must confirm enrollment in each grade.

If you need another copy of the enrollment contract, please contact Ellen Castillo in the Business Office at ecastillo@baldwinschool.org.  It would help us to have confirmation from all families as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
You can feel excitement echoing throughout our halls this week as the exam period is over and the second semester is underway. Because of the recent snow days, grade reporting for the first semester will be slightly delayed but the faculty plan to submit their grades and comments by the end of this week.

Also, our French exchange students arrived early this week, adding to the excitement around the Upper School.  We hope they will feel at home throughout their visit with Baldwin.
Baldwin will show a screening of the hard-hitting documentary, Race to Nowhere, Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Athletic Center. The film examines the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children’s lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared and stressed-out youth.

On Saturday, Jan. 29 Baldwin's varsity squash team captured the Mid Atlantic Squash Association (MASA) title.  After beating Lawrenceville 6-3 in the semi-finals, Baldwin went on to defeat the tournament's host, Episcopal Academy, 9-0.

This victory secured our team a No. 2 seed at the US High School Team Squash Championship, which will be held at Yale University Feb. 11-13. Go Bears!
Help us help our local businesses by encouraging them to sponsor the Baldwin Gala. Supporting our event will allow companies to receive valuable, targeted and cost-effective exposure through ads in the Gala keepsake program as well as a feature on the Baldwin website.  To make sponsorships easy and affordable, installment payment plans are now available.

A dream is a wish your heart makes... and your Lower School Valentine(s) will be dreaming of the Father Daughter/Dance in the Residence on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Click here to register for the event every little girls looks forward to, the annual Father/Daughter Dance!

In a survey of 4,200 girls’ school graduates, more than 80% reported they were better prepared to succeed in the co-ed world precisely because they went to a girls’ school.
