Christine Suplick, assistant varsity cross country coach, shares a running tip of the week in preparation for The Alex Wake 5K Run: "How do you know if you are running "fast enough"? For shorter races, such as a 5k, your moderate pace should be fast enough so that you can talk to a friend, but it's difficult. Your race pace should be a pace at which talking is extremely difficult, particularly at the beginning and at the end." "When preparing for a race or any athletic event, it's important to start off on the right foot! Take a look at your running or athletic shoes. Do they need replacing? If you have run approximately 300 miles (for a young athlete) or more with your current shoes, the answer is yes! Over-worn running shoes can lead to injuries, which is a poor start to your training. Your shoes are in good condition? Lace them firmly, double knot the laces, and let's get started!"

Alexandra Wake, a gentle, talented 14 year old student at The Baldwin School, was the victim of domestic violence that took not only her life, but that of her mother and grandparents on January 15, 2002. Alex was an extraordinary young woman whose tragic death was an enormous loss to our community. Her contributions as a scholar, athlete and friend were invaluable. A hard working, intellectual Baldwin girl, she was empathetic and believed in building bridges and breaking down walls. Alex was a member of our cross country and track teams and this Memorial Run/Walk is the medium by which we celebrate her life.
The 10th Annual Alex Wake Memorial 5K Run & 1 Mile Fun Walk continues to provide our community at Baldwin and on the Main Line with a better understanding of, and the resources available for, women’s health, empowerment of women, and combating domestic violence. In addition to funding an endowed scholarship in Alex's name, a percentage of the proceeds help underwrite Blue Gray's endeavor in support of Baldwin Athletics, including educational programs for all divisions.
This event was presented by Blue Gray, Baldwin Athletics and the Development Office.

5/7/2012. . . The Ninth Annual Alex Wake 5K Run & 1 Mile Fun Walk was a huge success with more than 300 runners and walkers participating and many more in attendance, cheering on the runners and walkers.
The event is a tribute to Alexandra Wake, a gentle, talented 14 year old student at The Baldwin School, who was the victim of a horrific act of domestic violence that took not only her life, but that of her mother and grandparents on January 15, 2002.
The Alex Wake event continues to provide the Baldwin and Main Line community with a better understanding of and the resources available for women’s health, empowerment of women, and combating domestic violence. Three separate assemblies addressing women’s issues were held in April and May for all divisions in conjunction with the Alex Wake Run & Walk.
This year, the event generated more than $41,000 which will be applied to an endowed scholarship in Alex's name; a percentage of the proceeds will also help underwrite Blue Gray's endeavor in support of Baldwin Athletics, including educational programs.
Blue Gray, the Development Office and Baldwin Athletics thank all of thesponsors, volunteers and participants for their continued support of this flagship event for Baldwin.
