11/1/11...As a 2011 service project, 35 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students raised $520 to help advance the mission of girls’ education worldwide. The students completed household chores to earn the money, which they donated to Pink Bikes, a newly formed non-profit that delivers bikes to girls in Cambodia, Costa Rica and Sudan with the goal of helping to increase accessibility to school.
“To introduce our service project, the students and I discussed how fortunate we are to be able to go to school, and how the adults in some countries don’t believe that girls should go to school,” said Emelie Wilkes, pre-kindergarten teacher at The Baldwin School. “This attitude is something my students could hardly believe. Together, we brainstormed ways in which we could help those children go to school, and decided that we could raise money to give them a means of transportation.” Forty pink bikes were delivered to girls in Cambodia in October, marking Pink Bikes’ third donation since the organization’s inception in 2010. |
| 10/31/11...Did you see the object flying over the Residence on Friday, Oct. 28? Baldwin's Digital Photography class sent a 6 foot high helium-filled balloon up into the sky. Attached to the helium balloon was a video camera which captured amazing shots of the Residence and some of its surroundings. The class plans to extract still shots from the flight film to create one large overhead shot of campus.

10/26/2011. . . For the second consecutive year, sophomore Kristine Rojo earned the title of InterAc Tennis Champion.
Kristine defeated Agnes Irwin's No. 1 Singles player to win the tournament. She finished the season with a record of 9-1. |

10/26/2011. . . Congratulations to the Varsity Tennis Team for their outstanding performance at the InterAc Tennis Tournament on Monday. All ten of Baldwin's players medaled at the event, which included seventy tennis players from the InterAc. The team finished second in the tournament and third in the regular InterAc season.
Kristine Rojo '14 won the Gold medal in 1st Singles for the second consecutive year. Connie Wang '14 captured the Silver medal in 2nd Singles, Victoria Gevurtz '13 won the Bronze medal in 3rd Singles; and Ali Thaler '15 won the Bronze medal in 4th Singles.
Co-captains Tori Robinson '12 and Abby Grosskopf '13 won the Silver medal in 1st Doubles. Connie Lee '13 and Selena Maity '14 won the Silver medal in 2nd Doubles and Julz Vaccaro '13 and Emilie Wache '13 secured the Silver medal in 3rd Doubles. |

| 10/24/11...On October 14, the Lower School had a visit from Ruth Freeman Swain, children's author of such popular books as Bedtime, Underwear: What We Wear Under There and How Sweet It Is (and Was): The History of Candy.
During her visit, she met with Lower School girls to share her story of being an author. Ruth shared the process of writing a book from start to finish, including finding inspiration for her stories. The girls loved when Ruth shared artifacts of historic undergarments.
Ruth met with Grade IV to share writing tips, as the girls are working on their own creative writing stories. Pre-K and K students enjoyed story time with Ruth as she read Bedtime. Her trip culminated with a visit to the Grade V classrooms, where Ruth shared her poetry.

| 10/21/11...The Anne Frank Library staff continues to introduce fun and exciting technology to enhance the learning experience of Baldwin students. More students are reading enthusiastically from Kindles and making interactive class projects with the help of flip cameras. The librarians are also helping teachers bring technology into their classrooms.

 10/25/11...Baldwin and The Haverford School, partnering with Healthy Hearts for Sports, has scheduled a second heart screening for its Middle and Upper school students on Thursday, November 17 in the athletic center. Pre-registration is required: please contact Shelley Lapinski in the athletic center for more information.
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) claims the lives of scores of young athletes each year from undetected heart defects. While the statistics for harboring a heart defect are low, the risks are too great to ignore.

| 10/20/11... In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, five Baldwin Lower School students traveled to Salon di Moda in Bryn Mawr – but not for your typical haircut. Angelina L. ’23, Zoe R. ’23, Kaya W. ’22, Hana A. ’21, Frances W. ’20, Brie Daley, grade II teacher and Kath Houlahan, manager of admissions operations each donated a minimum of eight inches of hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. Pantene and the American Cancer Society have partnered on Beautiful Lengths to provide free, real-hair wigs to women living with cancer.
“Baldwin's core values of learning, responsibility, respect, honesty and compassion are the heart of our Lower School curriculum,” explained Ms. Daley. “Baldwin's service opportunities, like this donation to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths, offer our students the chance to demonstrate character and to show compassion for others. I'm so proud of each of these incredible girls!”
Additionally, thank you to Blake L. ’22, Rani B. ‘21, Taylor L ‘21 and Robyn Connelly (website coordinator) for donating their hair earlier this fall. A total of 109 inches was cut for the cause!

10/19/11...Visit Baldwin on Grade I's Class Heritage Day, and you'll feel like you've been transported abroad. After extensive research, the students greeted parents this morning in the "native" language, educated them on local customs, and shared art work, artifacts, books and more from their homelands. The students dressed in authentic garb or wore specific colors to represent the country.

| 10/18/2011...On October 28, Baldwin Grade IV students will make the quick commute to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (BMFI) for See, Hear, Feel. According to the Institute, See, Hear, Feel teaches students critical viewing skills and the techniques of telling a story through film. Using the cinema to spark their own creative expression, the children learn to write with clarity, confidence, and joy, and improve their own storytelling skills. This exciting new method of learning is what Grade IV students will be engaged in next Friday. Baldwin directly supports BMFI as a Community Partner, and as such takes part in special student and faculty education programs. Since its opening in the 1920s, the BMFI has been lauded by the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, and received the “Best Movie Theatre” award by Best of Philly 2010. 10/17/11...On Oct. 12, students, faculty and alumnae gathered to celebrate Florence Baldwin's 153rd birthday. Students sang "happy birthday" and cheered with cupcakes, faculty dressed as Florence Baldwin (circa early 1900s) and alumnae planned get-togethers across the country. Middle School Music held a birthday song competition - writing original lyrics and setting it to music (stay tuned for the video clips on our YouTube channel). A handful of Lower School, Middle School and Upper School students visited the grave site of Florence Baldwin, her two sisters and her mother at Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr. 10/14/11...Baldwin has actively reinvigorated our science program throughout the past 50 years with major overhauls during the three years from 1995-97 through a grant from the state of Pennsylvania for an initiative called Integrating Math, Science and Technology (IMAST), again in 2005-2007 through funding from an E. E. Ford Foundation Grant, and most recently in 2010-2012 as we reorganize our Middle School and Upper School Science programs and create new senior science electives. Stay tuned for a blog and video series with Science Department faculty, students and faculty alumnae. |
|  9/12/2011. . . The Varsity Soccer Team lost 6-2 to visiting Lower Merion on Saturday. Baldwin finished the first half scoreless but came back to match LM goal-for-goal with two second half goals, scored (unassisted) by Maddy Brill-Edwards ’15 and Maddy Dawkins ’15.
First year Baldwin Varsity Soccer Coach Toril Hinchman shared, “The team turned in a consistent, solid effort today. Specifically, the midfield did a good job maintaining possession, and the defense was constantly tested by Lower Merion’s direct style of play. Despite playing without five of the starters, the players accepted the challenge and hustled until the last second. The goalkeeper, Heather Brown ‘14, had an excellent game with 9 saves (but suffered an injury forcing her to sit out the balance of the game).”

|  9/12/2011. . . The Varsity Tennis Team started the 2011 season with a 7-0 non-league win over Merion Mercy on Friday. The team won the InterAc Tennis Title last year, a first in Baldwin history. Number 1, #2 and #3 Singles return for Baldwin as well as four of the six Doubles players.
In the Merion Mercy match, hosted by Baldwin, Kristine Rojo ‘14, playing #1 Singles, won 6-0, 6-1. Connie Wang ‘14 won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 Singles and Victoria Gevurtz ‘13 won 6-0, 6-0 at 3rd Singles. Ali Thaler ’15 won her first match as a freshman varsity player 6-0, 6-0 at 4th Singles.
The 1st Doubles team of co-captains Tori Robinson ‘12 and Abby Grosskopf ’13 won 6-0, 6-0 while Connie Li ’13 and Selena Maity ’14 won a hard fought match at 2nd Doubles 6-3, 6-2. Julz Vaccaro ’13 and Emilie Wache ’13 won 6-0, 6-0 at 3rd Doubles.

|  9/14/2011. . . The Varsity Field Hockey Team traveled to Friends Central and won 3-1 in the team’s first 2011 season game.
Junior midfielder, Taylor Nickens received a pass from sophomore midfielder, Chessy Nicoletti at the 23:22 mark in the first half to put the Bears up 1-0. Senior forward, Kaitlyn Hobson received a pass from freshman midfielder, Alexa Horowitz at 19:53 in the second half to bring the lead to 2-0. The final goal of the half came from sophomore forward, Daria Harlamova, who scored, unassisted off a goalie deflection, at 10:47. Friends Central’s lone goal was scored with 7:48 remaining in the game, after a Baldwin defensive breakdown.
“Baldwin’s eighth grade goalie, Maddy Carre, played outstanding in her first varsity debut, recording five saves. Co-captains Nickens and Nicole Wells ’12 (defense) did a wonderful job controlling the midfield,” commented first year Baldwin Varsity Coach, Linda Delaney.
“I am excited to coach a rebuilding team and I truly believe by improving our dedication and work ethic we can have a successful season. Each day is a new day and a new day to improve upon yesterday.”

|  9/14/2011. . . The Varsity Volleyball Team hosted West Mont Christian for its season opener yesterday and beat them in three: 25-23 25-23 25-22.
Senior Randa Melham led with 13 digs. Junior Julia Fournier and senior Kayla Kleczka led service aces with 6 each. Kleczka also led the Bears with 13 kills.
“This was a hard fought point-for-point match,” commented Varsity Volleyball Coach, Deb Surgi. “While this was not our best fundamental volleyball, the Baldwin Bears will learn from this and continue to focus on solid fundamental volleyball."

|  9/14/2011. . . The Varsity Tennis Team won their second season match yesterday, defeating their non-league opponents, Friends Central 7-0. The Bears also swept their first opponent last week, bringing their record to 2-0.
Kristine Rojo ‘14 led the way at 1st Singles winning 6-3, 6-1. Connie Wang ‘14 won 6-1, 6-2 at 2nd Singles. Victoria Gevurtz ’13 won 6-1, 7-6 (4) at 3rd Singles while Ali Thaler ’15 won 6-4, 6-0 playing 4th Singles.
The 1st Doubles team of Tori Robinson ‘13 and Abby Grosskopf ‘13 won 6-0, 6-3 while Connie Lee ’13 and Selena Maity ’14 won a hard fought match prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at 2nd Doubles. The 3rd Doubles team of Julz Vaccaro ‘13 and Emile Wache ’13 won 6-2, 6-3.

|  9/15/2011. .. The JV Tennis Team posted their third non-league win vs. The Hill School yesterday, bringing their season to 3-0.
The visiting Bears swept Hill 6-0. Musu Taylor ’14 won at 1st Singles 6-3, 6-3; Haley Weiss ’14 won at 2nd Singles 6-1, 6-3; Nicole DeLuca ’15 won at 3rd Singles 6-0, 6-4; Claudia Hogg ’14 and Nellie Shields ’14 won at 1st Doubles 6-2, 6-1; and Kate Levin ’15 and Rachel Dichter ’15 pulled out an amazing victory at 2nd Doubles 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a 10 pt. super tiebreaker for the third and final set.
In addition, Baldwin played 3 exhibition matches: Rebecca Haley ’15 won at 4th Singles 6-0, 6-2; Kim Rouse ’12 and Jasmine Syed ’15 won at 3rd Doubles 6-3, 6-0 and rounding out the team at 4th Doubles Sarah Durlofsky ’15 and Isabella Romeo ’15 won 6-0, 6-2.

Ali Thaler ’15 lost at 4th Singles 3-6, 3-6.
The Doubles were led by Tori Robinson ‘12 and Abby Grosskopf ’13 winning 6-3 , 6-2. Connie Lee ’13 and Selena Maity ’14 won at 2nd Doubles 6-3, 6-3 while the 3rd Doubles team of Julz Vacarro ’13 and Emilie Wache ’13 won a pro set 8-3.
