The Position
The responsibilities of Mathematics Department Chair include supervising a department of 8 - 9 teachers in Middle and Upper Schools, testing and placing students in appropriate class sections, and serving as an academic leader in the school. In addition, the department chair is expected to teach four sections of math in grades 6 - 12, to be advisor to the Math Club, to facilitate student involvement in math competitions, to engage in those duties typical of independent day school life, and to support the school's mission.
Qualifications
Candidates should have an M.A. or M.S. in a relevant subject area and at least 5 years of teaching experience in the discipline. The strongest candidates will have a broad range within the discipline, as our math courses range from PreAlgebra in grades 6 and 7 to Logic, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations in grade 12. We also offer several Calculus courses. We seek successful, innovative departmental leadership experience and/or strong potential for such leadership. We also seek experience in curriculum design and development. In addition to the ability to teach Mathematics effectively, engage students positively, and interact productively with colleagues and parents, the successful candidate will have a strong facility in the use of appropriate technology.
