  • July 19, 2022 Update on the Head of School Search

    Dear Baldwin Community,

On behalf of our Head of School Search Committee, we are excited to share an update on the progress of our search over the past many weeks.

Our consultants, Anne Coyle and Shana Schneider of Russell Reynolds Associates, were on campus or online for 13 listening sessions, meeting with students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae and the Board of Trustees. In addition, almost 370 members of the community completed an online survey. We appreciate the time and care so many of you devoted to those conversations and the passion with which you shared your affection for Baldwin and your hopes for the School's next chapter.

Drawing from this feedback, the Search Committee has created a Position Specification, which details the mission, strengths and characteristics of The Baldwin School, the priorities for the next Head as derived from our information gathering efforts and the qualifications and desired profile of our next Head of School. This document is also available on our Head of School Search webpage and will be widely shared by Russell Reynolds Associates. We encourage you to please take a few minutes to read through the specification. Feel free to share the document and if you would like to present a candidate, please send information to baldwin@russellreynolds.com.

Our process now shifts to building a slate of candidates. Our consultants have already engaged numerous impressive individuals and will continue to recruit and evaluate potential candidates in the weeks and months ahead. It remains our expectation that our Search Committee will select and interview semifinalists in early Fall.

We continue to welcome community input. If you have thoughts to share, please email search@baldwinschool.org. We will provide further updates closer to the beginning of the next school year. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

    Sincerely,
Rachel Gerstenhaber Stern '83 and Martha Ortiz (P '16)

  • March 21, 2022 Message from Pat Weiser (P '22, '24) Chair, Board of Trustees

    March 21, 2022

Dear Members of the Baldwin Community,

I write on behalf of the Board of Trustees to share that, with gratitude and deep appreciation, we have accepted Dr. Marisa Porges’ decision to step down from her role as Baldwin’s Head of School at the end of next year, after our 2022-23 school year. Speaking for the entire Baldwin community, I want to thank Marisa for her leadership and commitment to Baldwin during her tenure here.

As a Trustee and now Board Chair, I have had the good fortune to meet with Marisa regularly since she became our first alumna Head of School. I walked away from every encounter ever more confident that Baldwin was in good hands. I think we have all seen her impact, as she guided our School to many achievements and through several challenges, including the recent pandemic. Throughout it all, Marisa led Baldwin with vision and foresight – guiding the development and implementation of our new strategic vision for real-world, interdisciplinary learning, ensuring our faculty, staff and girls had the support they needed to advance innovative teaching and student-focused programs across every grade, expanding our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming, and more. She helped Baldwin navigate the pandemic while simultaneously continuing to spearhead transformations to our campus, like the construction of our new Innovation Center and recent renovations to our Residence, and leading the most successful period of fundraising in the School’s history, with more to come as we close The Future Is Baldwin campaign later this year.

Along the way, we watched as Marisa also wrote a book, expanded her family, and shared her wisdom with our students during assemblies, seminars, moments of one-on-one mentorship, and more. As a parent, I can think of no better role model for my girls and their classmates. As a Trustee, I am grateful to watch one of our own graduates lead our School in the most Baldwin-way imaginable, ensuring that our School is stronger now than ever. This work has affirmed Baldwin’s position as a national leader for girls’ education that prepares our graduates for any future they imagine.

We are grateful that Marisa has given us ample notice of her plans so that we may conduct a thoughtful and thorough search for our next Head of School, and we are confident that Baldwin will attract exceptional candidates to be our next Head. The Board of Trustees has begun to assemble the team that will lead our search, and I am pleased to announce that Rachel Gerstenhaber Stern ’83 and Martha Ortiz (P ’16) have agreed to co-chair the Search Committee. As always, we will solicit input from all constituencies and are committed to keeping the Baldwin community informed throughout. I will follow up this announcement in the months ahead with more information about our search process.

Over the next year, we will celebrate Marisa as she continues her day-to-day leadership of Baldwin through June 2023. In the meantime, please join me in applauding her extraordinary leadership and thanking her for her continued commitment to our School.

    Warmly,
    Pat Weiser (P ’22, ’24)
    Chair, Board of Trustees
  • March 21, 2022 Message from Dr. Marisa Porges '96, Head of School

    March 21, 2022

    Dear Baldwin Community,

When I first stepped onto campus three decades ago, I knew Baldwin was a special place. That said, I did not imagine the impact that community would have on my life, as a student, as an alumna, and as its Head. Over the years, Baldwin’s people and programs have made the biggest difference for me. It is thus bittersweet that I write today to share that next year will be my last as Baldwin’s Head of School, as I have decided to step down at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

The decision to chart a new course at this time was not an easy one. It has been an honor to lead and learn from the inspiring faculty, staff and administrators who bring Baldwin’s mission to life each day for all of our Bears and to partner with our parents, alumnae, and Trustees in that effort. Though it is not just the daily work of helping every girl become her best self, in and out of class, that makes me so proud. It is also how much we have accomplished together to advance Baldwin’s institutional priorities and create a lasting legacy for future students – including by launching our strategic vision for interdisciplinary learning, introducing new approaches to student academic and social-emotional support, expanding of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work plus all that we have done to promote community building, enhance fundraising that supports our teachers, students and programs, renovate our campus spaces, and more.

Most especially, I am grateful for the time and special memories I shared with all of our Bears, past and present. My return to Baldwin as our 8th Head of School reaffirmed for me the power of our School as a community – a sentiment that came through acutely since the start of the pandemic but was always present during moments, big and small, that I had with each of you throughout my tenure. I will cherish the relationships that I have formed with so many kind, generous, smart, and inspiring Baldwin community members, as we found new ways to honor Florence Baldwin’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of bold young women who will make lasting contributions to the world.

Even so, I know the time is right for Baldwin, from such a position of strength and with all our accomplishments in mind, to begin the process of transitioning to a new Head. My intent in sharing my plans now is to provide the School plenty of time to identify a successor of the highest quality. As that is underway, I look forward to our ongoing partnership over the next 15 months, as we continue to give every Bear the best of Baldwin.

    Sincerely,
    Marisa Porges ’96, PhD

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 8 items.

  • What is the role of the Board of Trustees in the search?

A primary responsibility of the Board is the selection of and support of the Head of School. The Board must do so in the best interests of the full Baldwin community, by gathering input and perspectives from all stakeholders. The detailed task of conducting the search is being undertaken by the Board-designated Search Committee led by Co-Chairs Rachel Gerstenhaber Stern '83 and Martha Ortiz (P '16).
  • What is the role of the Search Committee?

The Search Committee is charged with engaging and learning from all constituents to define the qualities required of the next Head of School. The Search Committee will review candidate submissions, interview the most viable candidates, speak with multiple references and make a final recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Baldwin’s Board of Trustees ultimately bears responsibility for appointing the Head of School.
  • How were Search Committee members selected?

Search Committee members were selected by the Board Chair and the Search Committee Co-Chairs, and approved by the Board. Search Committee members share a deep appreciation for The Baldwin School’s history and mission. They include alumnae, parents, former parents and faculty who offer a diverse set of experiences and points of view as well as a strong degree of commitment to, and involvement in, the School community.
  • What is the role of the search firm Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA), and how were they selected?

The Co-Chairs developed a request for proposal which was circulated to a number of qualified firms. After evaluating the experience and responses of firms specializing in the independent school arena, the Board engaged Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA) to assist the Search Committee. RRA consultants Anne Coyle and Shana Schneider will help guide our process, serve as coaches to our Search Committee and recruit qualified candidates.
  • What is the scope of the search?

The search for the new Head of School is broad in scope. The Search Committee will consider a range of candidates, including leaders actively looking for a new position, those with an academic background or perhaps a non-traditional background and candidates who become interested because we bring the potential position to them. The Co-Chairs will periodically update the Baldwin community; however, confidentiality about individual candidates remains a critical component for success. As such, the Search Committee will not comment on candidates participating (or not participating) in the search.
  • How will candidates be evaluated?

The position statement will be a combined effort by the School, RRA, and the Search Committee and be based on community interviews and survey data. This statement will serve as the basis for candidate evaluation.
  • What is the general timeline for the Head of School search?

We are currently planning to announce the appointment of a new Head of School in early Winter 2022. The new Head will assume responsibility on July 1, 2023.
  • How can I help during the search?

Broad community input will be critical to effectively defining the leadership, professional and personal qualities required in the new Head of School. There will be forums for faculty, staff, students, parents and alumnae to meet with our consultants. Community members will also have an opportunity to complete an online survey.
"I will cherish the relationships that I have formed with so many kind, generous, smart, and inspiring Baldwin community members, as we found new ways to honor Florence Baldwin’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of bold young women who will make lasting contributions to the world."
