Baldwin Welcomes New Faculty and Staff

This coming school year, The Baldwin School welcomes 15 new faculty and staff members.

Jennifer Beatty - Manager of Enrollment Events and Student Visit Experience – Jennifer comes to us from Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School, where she was the Academy Director (K-4) & Instructional Coach (K-8). She earned her master’s degree from The University of Pennsylvania and her bachelor’s degree from The George Washington University.

Athan Biss – Teacher of History – Athan comes to us from Madison Country Day School in Madison, Wisconsin, where he taught World History and U.S. history. He is a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) at the University of Wisconsin Madison, earned his M.A. in Education/Special Education from Pace University and earned his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University.

Diana Clavin - Manager of Enrollment Operations – Diana comes to us from Ursinus College where she was the Associate Director of Admissions: Enrollment Data and Technology Manager. She earned her M.S. from Neumann College and her bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College.

Emily Erb – Teacher of Handbells – Emily Erb’s teaching career started in 2009 in New York City; she has a B.A. in Piano Performance from James Madison University and an M.A. in Music Education from Columbia University. Emily has most recently been teaching at Holy Child Rosemont as well as director of music at St. Mark's in Conshohocken.

Jaimee Fitzpatrick - Teacher of 4th Grade – Jaimee’s teaching career began in 2004 as the Grade 4 teacher at Girard College, a Grades 1-12 independent college preparatory school in Philadelphia. Jaimee earned her B.A. degree from Temple University and she is an exceptional educator, especially with her expertise at differentiating coursework for advanced students of this age. Her teaching philosophy focuses on providing a classroom experience that cultivates personal growth in character, confidence and leadership.

Erin Hesketh – Grade 2 Teacher - Erin comes to us from Daniel Webster School in Weehawken, NJ, where she taught first grade. She has a Master of Education degree with Reading Specialist Certification from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from The Catholic University of America. Some of Erin’s strengths within the classroom include differentiating instruction, using technology in a purposeful way that advances the academic growth of her students, actively engaging students, using assessments to inform instruction, utilizing positive classroom management and creating centers within the classroom targeting the various learning needs of her students across a number of different subject areas.

Niki Applebaum Johnson - Co-Director of College Counseling – Niki comes to us from Harvard University, where she was the Senior Admissions Officer and Assistant Director of Financial Aid. She was also the Founding Director of the Harvard First Generation Program, an initiative aimed at supporting first-generation college students at Harvard from across the country. Her experience in schools and in college admissions provide a nuanced understanding about the college process, which will enhance our counseling program and provide superb guidance for our students. Niki was an undergraduate at Brown University, where she earned a B.A. in English Literature and American Civilization while also earning an award for dance. She earned her M.A. from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.

Melissa Karas - Director of Advancement Operations – Melissa was previously the Director of Relationship Management at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Prior to that, she was the Director of Advancement Services at The Hill School. She earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Kutztown University.

Addison Lilholt MS Technology/Dream Lab Teacher - Addison comes to Baldwin with almost 10 years of teaching experience in the sciences. His most recent position was as the 7th and 8th grade Environmental Engineering and Design teacher at a Philadelphia charter school.  In addition, Addison co-founded an after school robotics club that was popular among the students and parents. He earned his Master’s degree in Environmental Education from Arcadia University and his bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University.

Carlotta Lukens – Teacher of Mathematics – Carlotta comes to us from Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena, CA, where she was a 7th grade math teacher and advisor. She values the importance of students grappling with mathematical ideas and understanding the “hows” and “whys” behind the concepts introduced. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from San Diego State University.

Amy Shaifer - Co-Lead Teacher of Pre-Kindergarten - Amy is a familiar face around Baldwin as she was one of our most requested substitute teachers last year. Prior to that, Amy comes to us with a wide range of experience teaching in the early elementary years, most recently at the Montgomery School. She earned her B.S. in Psychology from James Madison University and her teaching certificate from William & Mary.

Kristin Thorkelson - Advancement and Special Events Coordinator – Kristin, a 2007 Baldwin graduate, comes to us from the Woodlynde School, an independent co-educational college preparatory school located in Strafford, PA, where she was the Advancement Assistant. Kristin earned her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University.

Stephanie Vogel – Teacher of Classics – Stephanie Vogel will be teaching Latin at Baldwin. She earned her B.A. in Classics and Economics from Bucknell University and her M.Ed. in Latin and Classical Humanities from Boston College. She comes to us from William Penn Charter School, where she was a Latin and Social Studies teacher.

Terri Wiley – Teacher of English – Terri Willey is joining the Middle School English faculty and will teach senior electives as well. Terri has 11 years of teaching experience and earned her M.Ed. from Chestnut Hill College and her bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University. She comes to us from Strawberry Mansion High School.

Jeremy Williamson – Teacher of Spanish – Jeremy will be filling a new position as we add to the Spanish program. He comes to us from time teaching in Spain, France and most recently Fairfax County Public Schools in McLean, VA. His M.A. in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies is from George Washington University and his bachelor’s degree in Spanish is from Penn State University.
