On Tuesday, March 20, Baldwin Libraries hosted award-winning children's book author and illustrator Brian Pinkney. Pinkney visited with our Lower School students to share his art and storytelling.
A graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pinkney has won two Caldecott Honors for excellence in children's book illustration, four Coretta Scott King Honors and a Coretta Scott King Award.
Pinkney frequently collaborates with his wife, author Andrea Davis Pinkney, and some of his most illustrious works include "Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra," "The Faithful Friend" and "In the Time of the Drums." Many of Pinkney's works focus on famous African-American musicians, artists, athletes and activists.
That afternoon, Baldwin Libraries facilitated a visit from Mr. Pinkney to Alain Locke Elementary School in Philadelphia, where he spent time with students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Baldwin also donated $1,000 in Scholastic books and reading materials to Alain Locke Elementary, in addition to signed copies of Pinkney's books.
