Honored Traditions

Celebrating traditions is a favorite part of life within the Baldwin Community.

Click to watch a video highlighting these cherished moments, designed and produced by two Baldwin students of the class of 2017. Read below to discover what happens in each division.

Lower School

Mexican Fiesta
After studying Mexican civilizations, Kindergarten students enjoy a Mexican-themed lunch party with their families. The girls wear costumes, make Mexican-folk-art-inspired decorations and perform a concert of Mexican songs for their guests.

Heritage Day
Each girl in Grade 1 showcases her heritage by creating a presentation and dressing in appropriate costume. Each grade is invited to visit the displays.

Holidays Around the World
To continue the appreciation and understanding of global cultures, Grade 2 researches and presents various holidays to their classmates.

Colonial Day
Students in Grade 3 dress in period attire from the time period and participate in candle making, sewing, traditional dance lessons, special crafts and learn to make a colonial dessert.

Wax Museum
Students in Grade 4 research the life of a famous American.  Students then dress up as that person and present information to visitors as if they were a waxwork in a museum.

Tea House
Students in Grade 5 set up a cafe and prepare menus, refreshments and baked goods for their guests. Students converse in Mandarin when taking orders and completing transactions.

Middle School

Tunic Wars with The Haverford School
During the Fall, students in Grades 6-8 enjoy this fun athletic event with the Middle School students from The Haverford School. The boys wear Baldwin tunics and compete against the girls in field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The day ends with a BBQ for players and spectators.

Girls in Grade 6-8 participate in a unique three-day program during the week leading up to Spring Break. It is an exciting learning experience allowing total immersion in a subject of the student’s choosing. Past choices have included Great Women of Stage and Screen, Entrepreneurship, Meaning and Experience of the Olympics and Photo Safari.

Speech Day
Every student in Grade 8 prepares a speech for the Middle School Assembly. Each week, a group of girls present on a topic of their choice.

Spring Fling
This is an end-of-year dance hosted by Baldwin's Grade 8 for their guests.

Moving Up Ceremony
On the last day of school Grade 8 students participate in a ceremony to mark their transition to Upper School. Family members and faculty are invited. Student leaders present on events of the year, a class video is shown and awards are announced by the Director of Middle School.

Upper School

Legacy Luncheon and Pinning Ceremony
A special event for legacy members of the graduating class, during the ceremony seniors receive a legacy pin to proudly display on their blazers. “Pinners” and special guests include parents, grandparents, aunts and sisters.

Banner Day
On the back walls of the Assembly Room, you will find banners for each class. During the winter term, Grade 9 students design and create a banner around a theme on their class color. It is presented at an Upper School assembly in February.

Ring Day
In grade 10, students receive signet rings at a class dinner. Following the dinner, girls decorate the schoolhouse in a theme based on the class color and the evening concludes with a sleepover. The following day, Upper School students and faculty are invited to turn the student’s ring, wishing them luck for the years ahead.

Marching-In Dinner
The Marching-In dinner is held in late Spring. The Junior class wears their Senior blazers for the first time and sing a newly composed class song.

Last Day Celebrations
To celebrate their last day before Commencement, Grade 12 girls give presentations about their externship experiences, play a video they create to commemorate their year and "ring the gong" - a time-honored tradition that began in the '80s whereby each girl strikes the Baldwin gong on the main staircase of the Residence.
