Baldwin’s Hourglass Wins Gold Medal

This spring, the entire body of work from The Hourglass, 2018-2019, was submitted for adjudication to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s (CSPA) News Print Critique. Baldwin is excited to announce that The Hourglass was awarded a Gold medal, the highest recognition available. The 17-page critique offers commendations and criticisms to the design, writing and editorial staff, which the staff will use moving forward.

 

According to the CSPA, “This critique was created to evaluate school publications according to sound journalistic principles. The CSPA has used critiques, also known as scorebooks, since 1925 to evaluate newspapers and magazines. … This edition of Scholastic News Print Critique offers challenging but realistic standards established by the top-rated student news publications during the past decade.”

 

This summer, seven Baldwin students participated in the CSPA Summer Journalism Workshop. Lavender Huang ’22, Alexa May Richards ’20, Menal Siddiqui ’20, Siggi Turcios-Wiswe ’20 and Lisa Wang ’20 took Writing and Reporting courses, while Hana Ahanger ’21 took the design course for her role as Hourglass Junior Creative Director. Jessica Zhu ’21 also took the design course for her work on the Roman Candle, Baldwin’s literary magazine. The students lived in Columbia’s dorms and took these classes on campus. They had the opportunity to go on Columbia’s college admissions tour and participate in their information session. They also saw the Broadway play “Waitress” while there.
