Noor Bowman ’20 Wins High School Leadership Award
Senior Noor Bowman was recognized during this week’s Upper School Assembly as a winner of the High School Leadership Award, which is presented by Widener University, in partnership with NBC 10. The award acknowledges and honors the region’s best and brightest future leaders who take it upon themselves to make a significant difference in their schools and communities. In its eighth year, the program recognizes students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership — those who stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools.
Noor, who was presented with a plaque by Widener University President and Baldwin alumna Julie E. Wollman ’77, PhD, is unafraid to do the work necessary to bring about change. She created and ran a workshop with a classmate about colorism, she helped to create and facilitate Baldwin’s Diversity & Equity Day "Building Bridges" and she spoke in front of hundreds of people at the Women’s March in Philadelphia.
“In addition to Noor’s drive to bring justice to those who are marginalized in our society, she is a kind, thoughtful young woman who is a valued mentor to peers,” said Dr. Wollman. “I am so proud to honor Noor's tireless and successful efforts to create moments of genuine learning and to give voice to marginalized members of the Baldwin community.”
In her essay for the award, Noor wrote, “Though it may seem easier to keep silent, it is more difficult to leave issues unaddressed and pretend they aren’t such a big deal. I have realized that people of different backgrounds view things differently, and that difference is valuable.”
Noor attended a celebratory program at the National Constitution Center last spring with other award recipients. They will each receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if they choose to enroll at Widener as a freshman for undergraduate studies, where they would be named an Apogee Scholar. As an Apogee Scholar, students participate in a leadership development program at the Oskin Leadership Institute, which includes earning a Widener leadership certificate and participating in a variety of on-campus leadership development activities.
“At Widener University, we are dedicated to developing leaders of character who become engaged citizens. We are proud to recognize the next generation of leaders who reflect our core principles through this program,” said Dr. Wollman.
