Baldwin Celebrates MLK Jr. Day

This week, the Baldwin community gathered for its MLK Jr. All-School Assembly, a wonderful event that celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. King. Our Middle School Black Student Union members served as MCs of the event. Students from Pre-K and Kindergarten sang a moving rendition of "This Little Light of Mine" and members of the First Grade presented Dr. King with a few "awards." Grade 5 performed a Readers' Theater titled “I Have a Dream, The Story of Martin Luther King Jr.” The Upper School choir Elizabthens joined Grade 5 to sing “Let There Be Peace,” by Andy Beck, and the Middle School chorus performed the song “I Dream a World,” written by Langston Hughes and arranged by Andre Thomas. The Upper School Black Student Union prepared a video for the assembly, providing student reflections on Dr. King and his legacy.

A keynote address by Kathleen E. Walls, Psy.D., concluded the assembly. Dr. Walls is the owner and founder of the G.R.E.A.T.E.S.T. Counseling & Consulting, located in Philadelphia, PA, and the author of The G.R.E.A.T.E.S.T. Soul Journey and Live by the Spirit: Inspired Thoughts Volume 1. She encouraged our girls to harness their power and stressed that nothing is impossible. She explained that with a slight shift in perspective, our students should remember that “I’m possible.”
Dr. Walls has hosted her own US-based FM radio and YouTube show “Dr. Walls & Friends.” She counsels, consults, coaches, teaches and delivers interactive seminars, helping people learn how to live their G.R.E.A.T.E.S.T. Life!
