Senior Students Present on Science Summer Internships

Lydia Snyder ’23 and Batya Kaplan ’23 presented to the Upper School about the work they did during their summer internships last summer. Lydia worked at Thomas Jefferson University at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in the laboratory of Dr. Hien Dang and her poster is titled "NELFE affects MYC signaling in HCC via interactions with SMARCB1." She studied the regulation of gene expression through chromatin remodeling in liver cancer cells using a variety of techniques including co-immunoprecipitation, western blotting and CRISPR. Batya worked in the Department of Neuroscience at the Perelman School of Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania in the laboratory of Dr. Hongjun Song. Batya's poster is titled "Investigating PTEN’s role in neurodevelopment with implications for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using a forebrain organoid model." She studied an enzyme involved in cell division and its role during neurodevelopment and its implications for ASD and macrocephaly. She used a brain organoid model derived from stem cells and CRISPR editing to determine that mutations in the gene can lead to later stage neuronal proliferation during development.
