Music

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything..." - Plato

During the course of a Baldwin girl's music education, she will be challenged to listen, experience and produce musical sounds while singing or using a variety of instruments. We invite you to learn more by reading about the programs we offer.

  • Baldwin B-Flats

The B-Flats are an auditioned a cappella ensemble of 18-20 singers. This group excels at singing 6 to 8 parts in close harmonies in many diverse genres, such as classical, jazz and current pop hits. The B-Flats performances often feature soloists and their own a cappella arrangements. They have an intense performing schedule on and off campus, singing 15-20 concerts each year.
  • Baldwin Chorus

The Baldwin Chorus provides a large choral experience for any interested singer, regardless of their past experience. This group prepares all types of great choral repertoire, both sacred and secular, often in several languages. This ensemble performs three concerts during the year, including collaborative performances with other schools.
  • Firenze

A classical chamber ensemble that performs repertoire for piano, flute, violin, viola and cello. They surprise audiences by their well-rehearsed and capable renditions of chamber music by composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Fauré and Handel.
  • Handbell Program

Baldwin offers girls the unique opportunity to make music as an ensemble member in Grade 8 and as an advanced ringer in Belles and Bronze in the Upper School. These select ensembles perform 5-octave handbell repertoire with musicality and precision.
  • Jazz Band

Jazz Band is an ensemble for Upper and Middle School instrumental students who are interested in exploring and playing different styles of Jazz. Chart reading, improvisation and confident solo expression are stressed in this group.
  • Orchestra

Orchestra, in all three divisions, gives girls who play instruments a chance to play together while experiencing various popular and classical repertoires. Firenze, an Upper School select ensemble, provides the platform for advanced instrumentalists to perform more difficult repertoire in smaller chamber ensembles.
  • The Baldwin Conservatory

The Baldwin Conservatory offers in-person lessons in piano, voice, strings, woodwinds and percussion during and after school. Please note voice lessons are available for 10-year-old students and older.

  • Touring Performances

The B-Flats and the Notables from The Haverford School have established a close musical relationship with the B-Sharps from Ordrup Gymnasium, a high school in suburban Copenhagen. During the performance tours in Denmark, the B-Flats and the Notables perform at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, at Rigshospitalet, the largest university hospital in Scandinavia, and at various local venues. The students stay with host families from Ordrup Gymnasium and always look forward to reciprocating the following year.  In addition to this trip, the Music Department plans a concert tour every third year during Spring Break to provide a unique musical experience for all of our Upper School performance ensembles.
