Baldwin Grace and Tradition Shine at Devon Horse Show’s Ladies Day

The Baldwin School community recently celebrated a spectacular Ladies Day at the Devon Horse Show, the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed horse competition in the United States. Head of School Lynne Macziewski joined current parents and representatives from the Baldwin School Parents’ Association for a day filled with cherished traditions and school spirit.

A Legacy in Every Stitch: The Custom Baldwin Hats
The highlight of the event’s fashion was the collection of stunning custom-painted, vintage-inspired hats worn by the Baldwin contingent. Designed by local artist Jane Hirshberg, each unique piece featured hand-painted illustrations of contemporary Baldwin students on horseback set against the backdrop of the school's historic campus. These hats were more than just fashion statements; they were a beautiful tribute to Baldwin’s deep-rooted equestrian legacy.

Historical Ties to the Main Line
The event served as a reminder of Baldwin’s long history on the Main Line, which predates even the Devon Horse Show itself. While Devon was established in 1896, Florence Baldwin founded The Baldwin School in 1888. The school’s grounds, formerly the Bryn Mawr Hotel, actually hosted the Bryn Mawr Horse Show Association between 1895 and 1913. In those early years, the Baldwin campus was home to stables and hosted glorious equestrian contests featuring carriage driving, hunters, and polo.

Beyond the festivities and a top award received during the event for their stunning hats, the day celebrated the shared qualities between equestrian excellence and a Baldwin education. Much like the magnificent horses and riders celebrated at Devon, Baldwin girls are known for their grace under pressure, strength of character, and disciplined preparation - qualities that never go out of style. And, as any horsewoman knows, true excellence is not simply bred, it is carefully trained, confidently guided, and beautifully demonstrated over time, a tradition Baldwin has proudly upheld for nearly 140 years.
