Parents and educators deserve a shout-out! Through expanded efforts, rates of anxiety and depression improved post-Covid for girls ages 12-17. Yet in 2024, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued a rare “Parents Under Pressure” advisory, linking high stress and burnout to modern parenting. Parents experience the continual vigilance of protecting their children from social media and excessive screen time, while devoting historically high levels of time and money on behalf of their children’s futures. Intensive parenting has tremendous benefits for children and adolescents. Seldom discussed is the fact that rates of anxiety and depression are rising for parents and guardians, who remain the primary safety net throughout emerging adulthood. We invite you to learn effective strategies that support age-appropriate autonomy in your children, and manage the understandable parental anxieties in this age of uncertainty. We’ll take a tour of the era before parenting was a verb (circa 1970’s). Then review the macro context of “how did we get here? Take a peek at “what’s next” for parents of teens and young adults.  We look forward to providing key insights to support both your child’s and your own well-being and mental health.
