In Remembrance of Baldwin Alumna Rachel Funk Jenkins '44

Rachel Funk Jenkins ’44, a beloved educator, coach and philanthropist, passed away on June 4, 2024, in Haverford, PA, at the age of 98. Rachel was predeceased by her devoted husband, R. Stuart Jenkins, who passed away in February 1998.
 
A cherished member of the Baldwin School community, Rachel's legacy began as a student at Baldwin, where she graduated in 1944. Her dedication to Baldwin was evident throughout her life, serving as a Class Secretary, a member of the Class of Purple Reunion Committee and as part of the 50th Reunion Committee in 1994. Rachel was instrumental in Baldwin's Board of Trustees, where she served from 1982 to 1991, including roles as Board Chair from 1987 to 1990, Senior Trustee and later as an Honorary Trustee. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Centennial Award in 1988. In 2014, Rachel was inducted into Baldwin's Athletic Hall of Fame for her distinguished service.
 
Rachel's commitment to education extended beyond Baldwin. After earning a BA in Psychology and an MS in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, she returned to Baldwin in 1952 as a physical education teacher, coach and Head of Athletics. Her coaching expertise spanned field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, tennis and badminton. She also served as a Class Advisor for the Class of 1958. In 1998, she established The Rachel Funk Jenkins '44 Scholar Athlete Scholarship Fund to support deserving young scholar-athletes at Baldwin.
 
Beyond her professional life, Rachel was deeply involved in her community. She served as Clerk of Session at Overbrook Presbyterian Church and was President of the Contact Care Line's Philadelphia division. Her volunteer work included visiting elderly and disabled members of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and bringing joy to residents at The Quadrangle, where she was named Volunteer of the Month in January 2016 for her thoughtful visits and birthday gifts. Rachel's warm spirit, dedication and compassion touched many lives.
 
Rachel is survived by a legacy of kindness and generosity that will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her. Her contributions to education, athletics and community service have left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. A memorial service will be held September 26th at 11 a.m. with reception following at 12 p.m. at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.
