Makenna Walko ’23 Wins High School Leadership Award

Junior Makenna Walko is a winner of the High School Leadership Award, which is presented by Widener University, in partnership with NBC 10. The award acknowledges and honors the region’s best and brightest future leaders who take it upon themselves to make a significant difference in their schools and communities. The program recognizes students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership — those who stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools.

“Makenna is peerless when it comes to empathy, understanding and generosity. Well before she held any official roles or titles at Baldwin, she immediately distinguished herself as someone who cares deeply for the wellbeing of those around her," explained Grade 9 Dean and English Teacher Alex Greco. "She has always been so genuinely considerate of her teachers and her classmates, both behind the scenes and, now, out in front as the junior class president. Makenna is not only a standout as a leader, but also her academic accomplishments set her apart as a true scholar in the classroom. Taking the most challenging classes that we offer, excelling in all of them and seeking ways to add additional opportunities to her course load, Makenna is known for her outstanding writing and problem solving. Teachers look to Makenna to set the tone in their classes, and use her work as the baseline for excellence.”

Makenna will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if she chooses to enroll at Widener as a freshman for undergraduate studies, where she would be named an Apogee Scholar. As an Apogee Scholar, students participate in a leadership development program at the Oskin Leadership Institute, which includes earning a Widener leadership certificate and participating in a variety of on-campus leadership development activities.
