Nearly 30 Percent of Baldwin Seniors Honored by National Merit Program
Baldwin is proud to announce that the National Merit® Scholarship Program recognized 11 students from our senior class. In the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, 3 Baldwin students have been named Semifinalists, and 11 students have been named Commended Students.
Congratulations to Simela (Melina) Intzes, Kate Ma and Angelica Tang, who have been recognized as Semifinalists for their outstanding performance on the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Of the nearly 1.3 million high school juniors who entered the program, these 3 Baldwin students were among 16,000 seniors who qualified for recognition as Semifinalists.
In addition to Baldwin’s Semifinalists, congratulations go to Haley Duong, Ella Esplin, Laila Gopalani, Macy Li, Claire Lu, Jennifer Ma, Piper Skoglund, and Violet Zhang, who have been named National Merit Commended Students.
To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2026. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 382,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
