On May 2, The Baldwin School officially ushered in a “New Era of Play” with a vibrant ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication for its new, $4 million state-of-the-art turf field. Held during the School’s Alumnae Reunion Weekend, the event marked the completion of a transformative project that restores home-field advantage for Baldwin’s field hockey and softball programs, which previously had to compete at off-site facilities.
The “Grow the Game” Initiative
The ceremony also served as the official launch of the “Grow the Game” initiative, a landmark partnership with Longstreth Sporting Goods, a company founded by players for players, with nearly 50 years of experience as a leader in field hockey equipment and clinics. The “Grow the Game” initiative is designed to bolster interest in field hockey both within the Baldwin community and across the broader region, leveraging the School's new world-class facilities.
“It is hard to overstate the significance of this project to not only our Baldwin athletic teams, but also to so many community members,” said Lynne Macziewski, Head of School. “This field and this partnership, along with a strategic focus on athlete development at Baldwin, is only the beginning of considerable growth for our athletic programming.”
Sustainability and Innovation
Committed to environmental stewardship, Baldwin selected a Sprinturf surface for the new turf field, featuring 100% recyclable fibers. The field utilizes BrockFILL™, an engineered organic wood-particle infill that significantly reduces surface temperatures and mimics the feel of natural grass.
Beyond the turf, the Upper Field area has been reimagined as a community hub. The project includes:
- An expansive natural amphitheater framed by historical cherry trees, providing seating for over 100 spectators.
- A new stone terrace and a sustainable rain garden.
- A granite recognition wall honoring the leadership donors.
This project and partnership represents Baldwin's enduring belief in the power of girls and the essential role athletics play in building wellness, resilience, and leadership skills.
